This continuation Animation & 3D modeling course is perfect for student’s who already have experience with Adobe Animate & Autodesk Maya. You’ll build on the basics and dive into more complex animations with 2D & 3D animations, like animal movements and human action cycles. We’ll continue exploring animation principles, focusing on timing, weight, and fluid motion. We will also continue 3D modeling skills. Students will refine their storyboarding and animatics skills, learning how to plan and visualize their animated projects. You’ll also continue skills in hands-on experience with video editing to finalize your cartoon shorts. Expect to animate animals and human action cycles in a variety of styles. By the end, you’ll have created polished animated clips ready for sharing and further editing. This course is designed to help you level up your animation skills and bring your ideas to life!
Course objectives:
- Expand knowledge of animation principles by focusing on timing, weight, and fluid motion to create more realistic and dynamic animations. In addition to creating props in 3D modeling and 2D drawings.
- Develop continuation skills in animating animal movements and human action cycles in various styles.
- Refine storyboarding and animatic techniques to effectively plan and visualize animated projects before production.
- Enhance video editing skills for assembling and finalizing animated shorts, including transitions, sound, and final touch-ups.
- Increase proficiency in Adobe Animate & Autodesk Maya tools to create polished, professional-quality animations.
- Practice creating fluid character animations with an emphasis on clear motion and expressive movement.
- Produce a portfolio of completed animated clips that can be shared and further developed for future projects.

Course Structure
Join us for our lively 1-hour live class each week! It’s going to be interactive and filled with valuable content. I really encourage everyone to participate actively so we can all succeed together. You’ll find resources and assignments posted in Canvas to support your learning, so be sure to log in regularly to check your progress toward your personal goals. Each week, I’ll list the homework assignments in our course modules. During our sessions, we’ll go over lecture notes, chat about project progress, have a fun Q&A on Zoom, and review homework. I’m looking forward to seeing you grow in the realm of technology.
Who should enroll?
This is a part 2 continuation course, so you would have to have taken the Animation & 3D Modeling 1 course. This course is designed for 9th – 12th grade students expressing creativity through art and technology, and are excited to learn how to bring animated characters and 3d modeling props and environments to life. You’ll find a supportive environment to develop your artistic abilities. It’s an excellent fit for those who enjoy hands-on projects, teamwork, and experimenting with new ideas. A willingness to experiment and collaborate with peers will help you thrive in this dynamic learning experience.
Prerequisite: Animation & 3D Modeling 1
- High speed, broadband Internet
- Headset, microphone, and webcam (for live sessions)
- Streaming video capabilities to watch recorded lectures
- A computer mouse with a visible scroll wheel
- Software
- Paid/subscription to Adobe Animate (ranges from $20-$39/month depending on the subscription plan you pick), for 2D Animation
- Free educational version of Autodesk Maya, for 3D Modeling/3D Animation
- Free Hitfilm for video editing animation clips together, adding voice overs, background effects, music, and video effects
- Free Google Drive for uploading large project files (AAO can provide students who do not have a gmail a school email address which includes Google Drive, please request from the registrar)
Evaluation and Feedback
Feedback will be given during each class through critique and discussion, as well as in more detail during project grading. Grades will be posted to Canavs LMS. Most assignment scores will be posted within a week after their due date. All parents are invited to join their student in Canvas as observers to view their student’s progress.
